Disability child engage through activity using PECS
Introduction
The aim of the assignment is to select a type of
disability child, develop a set of materials that would help a child with
particular disability, to interact and engage in an activity.
Children with disabilities are the most marginalise and
excluded group of student. Discrimination increases the disability
intrinsically in nature.
World health organization explained about Disability
is any restriction or lack, resulting from an impairment, of ability to perform
any activity in the manner or within the range considered normal for a human
being.
Reading and
learning disability due to deaf or hard to hear
A little far island in Maldives which is located from
the main city in southern part is Villingili. Raafiu, age seven is the second
of four children, and he having the deaf or hard to hear from childhood, when he
grown up he found the disability in reading, because not able to follow the
instruction of the teacher in the class room. There is A’ level school but
there are no resources for such disabled child, he do not have interest to go
to school, because of his disability.
Difficulties
in lives and views
Some islanders tease him about the disability. Who are
not know much about him they were trick to play with him, they know that he
cannot able to heat clearly. The teasing also sometime hurts the mind. Going to
the school difficult because someone have to come to drop to school. In school,
sanitation is a very challengeable thing to do. The cleanness of the wash rooms
are not good, special setup for disabilities are not made. Participation in
classroom activities are difficult, while other do the activity mostly everyone
ignores. That discrimination hurts remembers the disability and mentally
disappoint.
Suspected that when he has a much more difficult time than
other students in pronouncing or rhyming words or in learning numbers, the
alphabet, the days of the week, colours, or shapes. (Griffin, 1998)
Development
delay
A survey report says that in Maldives 30,000
disabilities are there, government giving pension and care to the disabilities (Treasury,
2015) .
The development delay happens because of surrounding behavior acceptance of
disability, understanding of disability are very less. There discrimination
avoiding when common work place. He could not realize and practice the
activities so it affect his social developmental delay. And parents used to
have other kids than that disable kid. So their concentration about the normal
kid education arrangement expenses and life future. But the idea of disabled
children have to participate in community or country scale decision making that
is vital to improve their lives and fulfilled the development.
Material
used PECS
The picture exchange communication system (PECS),
allows the child to communicate with teacher and slowly the behavior enable the
verbal communication in the surrounding. PECS is recommended in such situation
when child in disability. Child feels isolation and fear of society while
communication (Schwartz, 1998) . The knowledge of
society and education helps the child to overcome from the fear.
PECS was developed in 1984 by Lori Frost, MS, CCC/SLP and Dr. Andrew Bondy (Frost, 2003) . The goal of (PECS) is to teach children with disabilities
a fast, self-initiating, functional communication system. PECS begins with the
exchange of simple icons but rapidly builds "sentence" structure.
